This architecturally distinctive Hampstead property is remarkable for being set 70% below ground level. As a partially subterranean home, it appears like a stylish bungalow from the roadside, but is in fact a spacious 4000sq ft with an elegant sunken garden.

With the site located in a conservation area, as the main contractors we worked closely with our architectural partners to create a design that would both comply with regulations, yet still enable the owners to build a substantial family home. Though technically demanding, building below ground level was the obvious solution.

For the main structure, we used an RC basement construction with waterproof concrete and a delta membrane cavity drainage system. For the elevation, we chose an attractive mix of stone cladding and timber finishes. An eco-friendly design, the house also includes an intensive green roof and EcoDan air source heat pumps.

Internally, we resolved the issue of poor light by making glass a major feature of the build. By installing generous, triple-glazed aluminium windows and doors by Schuco throughout, we achieved a light, airy spaciousness. This feeling is echoed in the garden, which is enclosed by a stylish glass surround.

Other internal features include LED lighting, under floor heating and whole house ventilation with air conditioning.
